Alexander Dennis Limited

UK-based Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), a global leader in bus and coach manufacturing, combines flexibility and operational agility to ensure vehicles are designed by the industry for the industry.

“We collaborate with our customers and their passengers to accurately understand their needs, rather than delivering a standard, one-size-fits-all product. We believe this is what sets us apart from the competition,” says Michael Stewart, Group Finance Director, ADL.

Meeting customer needs

As a result of ADL’s efforts to meet customer needs, 2015 was a record-breaking year for the company, which achieved sales in excess of £600 million and saw the delivery of more than 2,700 vehicles and kits.

“This growth is attributable to our clear strategic focus – delivering lightweight, fuel-efficient vehicles with industry-leading reliability, lowest cost of ownership and best-in-class aftermarket support,” Michael explains.

International drivers

As one of the fastest growing bus and coach manufacturers in the world, ADL is looking towards further growth opportunities throughout 2016 and beyond. It aims to achieve £1 billion in profitable sales by 2020 and is currently investing significantly in new product development.

International markets are a key opportunity for growth. ADL recently signed a contract to deliver 90 double-deck vehicles to Mexico City in 2017. The vehicles will be the first double deck buses to be deployed on urban routes, anywhere in Latin America. “ADL’s three-axle Enviro500 double deck has already revolutionised high capacity passenger transport around the world, forming the backbone of many global cities’ fleets in Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Europe and North America,” notes Michael.

The challenges of growth

The sheer pace and extent of ADL’s international growth has brought its own challenges, as Michael explains: “Bank of Scotland has made a considerable investment in understanding our business, such as our requirement for different terms because we’ve got significant amounts tied up in working capital in overseas markets, close to our customers. Bank of Scotland supports us through these challenges, allowing us to focus on our business.”

Supporting Scottish business

“We’re delighted to be supporting ADL in their domestic and international growth strategy,” says Andy Edwards, Relationship Director at Bank of Scotland. “Their commitment to new product innovation, engineering excellence and their energy and drive for establishing their business in new markets serves as a benchmark for others.”

A long-term supporter of ADL, Bank of Scotland has worked alongside the company since it came out of administration in 2004.

A recipe for success

“Having the right product, at the right time, at the right price and supporting that product underpins your reputation,” says Michael of ADL’s continued success.

“Speed to market with new products is important. Funding from Scottish Enterprise allowed us to accelerate our development programme. It’s also vital to have your bank and your shareholders behind you. We can only deliver the projects of tomorrow with investment today,” he concludes.
