The future is electric for fire engine firm

A Scottish manufacturer has launched the world’s first fully electric fire engine after undergoing a Management Buyout (MBO) with support from Bank of Scotland.

Emergency One, in Cumnock, Ayrshire, supplies bespoke fire engines to fire authorities across the UK, as well as to private industrial customers including nuclear power stations.

It has recently undergone an MBO which now sees a new generation of talent take the helm at the business, securing its future for years to come.

The MBO has created six new shareholders, all of whom have worked their way up through the firm, and was backed by a £14 million term loan from Bank of Scotland.

A world first

Emergency One has now developed a fully electric fire engine, which it believes is a world first, and launched during Autumn 2020.

The firm is also seeking to grow its export sales, which currently make up around 5% of turnover, by targeting new markets including Australasia, the Middle East and Scandinavia.

With more than 200 staff, including 40 apprentices, Emergency One is the biggest employer locally, creating opportunities for local people in a region that was previously reliant on the mining industry.

Mike Madsen, Managing Director, Emergency One added: “The MBO came about because some of the previous directors were approaching retirement and it was time to freshen up the board and bring in some new talent.

“This is a very niche industry, so we have promoted from within, giving six of our younger engineers the opportunity to become shareholders and directors in the business.

“Bank of Scotland has been an excellent banking partner for us, giving us total support, and with this strong succession plan in place, Emergency One will still be going strong years after we’ve left the business.”
